Here's a recap so far. The S 23 and S 8 A are virtually the same carburetors. The only difference is in the intake manifold that they use. Sleeved versus unsleeved. So if you want to increase the performance of an S 23 with a sleeved intake, just remove the sleeve by pressing it out. Re-jet the carburetor to a #52 and you have a performance gain. Nothing to buy but a jet.

S 22/25, 30 MPH version
This carburetor uses a #58 jet for break-in and a #56 jet thereafter. The back of the carburetor measures 11.8mm (.465") and the front of the venturi measures 12mm (.475"). The atomizor tube is different in this carburetor then the other two. It has a small whole drilled in the back of the tube and can be seen when looking from the intake manifold end of the carburetor. The tube is longer because the atomizor chamber bottom is cast deeper. This is definitely a different carburetor.

This carburetor is teamed with an intake manifold that measures 11mm (.437") on the inside. In fact, it is the same manifold that the S 8 A carburetor uses. We can even go one step further and say that their is really only one intake manifold for these carburetors. The S 23 just has a restrictor sleeve in it.

Three way comparison
This is a three way comparison of the carburetors with their matched intake manifolds.

Throttle valves
Life would be grand if this was all that was different with the carburetors, but Encarwi put two different throttle valves in these carburetors. This is where my knowledge begins to peter out. I have yet to find a complete carburetor that I could trust to be accurate enough to use as a reference. Therefore I am asking for help from Batavus owners to fill in this gap of knowledge.

There are two different throttle valves for the Encarwi carburetor. The #2 and the #190. The #190 is used in the S 23 carburetor (that I know for sure) and the S8A(?).  The #2 is used in the S22/25(?). Both these throttle valves when tried in the same carburetor have different characteristics. The #190 offers a smoother throttle response and is the one I use in my carburetor, but then again I'm also running a modified S8A carburetor.

I received word that there is a #405 throttle valve for the S22 carburetor. Hopefully the bearer of this news can supply me with a large photo so I can add it with the others for comparison.
