Batavus Biturbo
Installation

This is a HOW TO on installing a Biturbo exhaust system to the Batavus with a Laura M48 engine I'm experimenting with the placement of the Biturbo muffler to achieve the most gain. So keep checking back for updates. If you have any suggestions or information that will help in the completion of this project, please email me. If you have questions about this project, well you're out of luck, because below is the sum total of my knowledge at this point. WARNING: This system is experimental. I take no responsibility in the accuracy or damage this system may cause to you Bat.
Updated: 6/18/01

1: Buy a Tomos 2-piece Eurocylinder 60cc and 70cc Biturbo exhaust speed kit.

Old Batavus exhaust. Tomos 2-piece exhaust.

2: Cut 1 1/2" off the Tomos head tube that comes with the kit. This 1 1/2" piece will be used as the sleeve adapter for your project. Note: The Tomos head tube can be used in it's entirety for this project and will bolt to the Laura cylinder head by enlarging the flange holes. The only problem is that it needs some additional bending to get the head tube pointing toward the back of the moped instead of pointing slightly toward the ground. This bending can be a challenge if you're not equipped with a torch or some other means of bending the head tube. I chose the easier alternative mentioned above.

Showing that the old Bat. and new Tomos head tubes almost have the same bolt spacing. Enlarging the Tomos mounting holes is required. Showing the downward turn of the Tomos head tube. This will need modified if you're going to use the Tomos head tube.

3: Remove the old muffler from the Batavus head tube. This is usually just a tight fit and can be removed by twisting the two halves apart. Heating the connection with a torch will help on the stubborn ones. Note: It should go without saying that this should be done with the exhaust system removed from your moped. The manifold bolts won't take much stress before breaking.

4: Slide the 1 1/2" sleeve over the Batavus exhaust head tube. Some filing of the weld seam in the sleeve may be necessary. These pictures depict the installation using the original length of the Batavus head tube.

5: Slide the Biturbo exhaust over the sleeve and bolt the exhaust system to your Bat. A new mounting bracket will have to be fabricated to support the exhaust at the rear wheel.

I'm experimenting with the length of the head tube and placement of the Biturbo muffler at this time to achieve the most gain. If my initial suspicions prove to be true, the Batavus head tube will probably be cut the same length as the Tomos head tube that comes with the kit. This will require sleeving the crank pedal away from the exhaust. I'll let you know how it works out.
